The Lorain County JVS is important to our community and to our region's economy. Each year the JVS provides quality career-technical training for over 5,000 young people and adults. A JVS education provides in-demand training that puts people to work.
Lorain County JVS has placed Issue 15, a general operating levy, on the March 6th ballot. Issue 15 will protect quality career-technical programs for students, adults and employers in Lorain County.
Issue 15 will renew the current 0.75 mill and add 0.5 mill for daily operating expenses. Issue 15 is a modest increase of $1.29 a month on a $100,000 home value.
The JVS has listened to community members and scaled back its request, cancelling plans for new construction and program expansion. Immediate passage of Issue 15 is critical to maintain the high-quality training programs currently offered at the JVS.
The failure of Issue 15, combined with $1.1 million in state cuts, will mean a total loss of 23% of the school’s operating revenue. This will result in $5 million of cuts to programs and services needed by our community.
Issue 15 is a necessity for daily operating expenses and for the maintenance and repair of aging building infrastructure to support the technology needed for high-tech, high-wage job training programs.
Budget adjustments and responsible cuts have been made and the school is currently operating at a 2009 spending level. Even with the passage of Issue 15, the JVS will continue to streamline the budget and hold the line on spending.
The JVS has provided quality technical training and education for 40 years and helps keep our local employers competitive by training skilled workers. Issue 15 is needed to keep Lorain County JVS strong. A strong JVS will help Lorain County build a better future.
